Born in Croatia though raised and educated in Germany, Damir Doma cut his teeth through early apprenticeships with designers Ann Demeulemeester and Raf Simons in Antwerp, Belgium. Working under his own auspices since 2006, the designer moved his team to a Paris studio in 2009 where he is expanding his vision into perfumes as well as a casual collection, entitled ‘Silent’, that hopes to be an antidote to the cacophonous din that is fast fashion today. The rigorous intelligence of this fresh talent, who is just beginning to show the world what he is made of, makes him a natural mainstay at concept stores such as The Corner in Berlin and Dover Street Market in London.
In any Damir Doma collection, draped silhouettes, flowing volumes, double layered attires, and soft tailoring abound while his fabric choices are invariably pure - raw cotton, cashmere, and washed leathers in muted tones that champion nature at its calmest. A tension of contrasts keeps his diehard fans (he has many, especially in Japan) eager for his latest looks. Damir Doma upholds at once an ethereal romanticism with pieces that are actually wearable, intelligence with simplicity, and a cultural design appeal that is diverse in just the right ways: his deeply European aesthetic is modern to the core yet invariably peppered with worldly references to Asian, Middle Eastern and North African fashion traditions – avoiding clichés in every stitch. The romantic nomad has never looked so sophisticated.
