Those were the days

2010 has flown by, six issues packed with the best of Middle Eastern luxury and living have come and gone. Reflection comes naturally at this time of year and here are the Bespoke team’s highlights from 2010. Roll on 2011.

• Frantically trying to keep up with HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal on a desert bike ride while clutching our Dictaphone in a death grip.

• Saddling up and trying to keep our head (literally) in the midst of flying mallets and several tonnes of sweating horse meat at an Argentinean polo match.

• Lying in wait for a chance meeting with a tiger in the forests of India’s Madhya Pradesh and then finally remembering to breathe again once she was gone.

• Meeting Lionel Messi and being forced to concede that none of us were ever going to make it as professional footballers.

• Sampling Vertu’s Concierge service in Italy for a few days and secretly hoping for another volcanic ash disaster so as to extend it by a week.

• Scaring ourselves to death while driving the latest Bugatti Veyron (this year’s Ultimate Vehicle Winner) in Spain … we knew there was a reason for speed limits.

• Discovering the dark arts of pan-Arab advertising with the fascinating Ramsay Najjar and then wishing we hadn’t, sometimes ignorance is bliss.

• Living out any number of boyhood dreams when surrounded by models and Caterpillar bulldozers. It’s alright, we were there for the fashion shoot, darling.

• Forcing Dubai’s best Japanese restaurants, Okku and Zuma into a head-to-head cook off, needless to say, the editor-in-chief didn’t hit his target weight that week.

• Stripping down an AK-47 in the middle of Yemen while discussing the benefits of concussion grenades with female graduates from the Sana’a Police Academy.
