Private islands first hit the headlines when the jet-set crowd of the 1950s and 1960s started to appear in the press, Aristotle Onasis was one of the first to bring the idea of the private island into the public consciousness. Since then a small number of fortunate individuals have been following suit. Be they business people or film stars, the allure of a private hide-a-way is often too strong to ignore.

Individualism plays an important role here; the prospective buyer is often a free spirit, one who feels a need for detachment, a space for reflection and above all, privacy. It’s possible to pigeon-hole these people, but only through using broad terms; they are all, without doubt, members of an exclusive club, one that has them straying from paths well traveled.

So, how exactly do you go about buying your very own slice of Heaven? Try the specialists Vladi Private Islands GmbH, a German firm run by Farhad Vladi, a German of Iranian descent. Vladi claims that now is the time to buy, “Over the past 20 years, demand for private islands has grown steadily, while the supply remains the same. This meant that more and more people began buying up islands as investments, rather than as homes. Now, thanks to the financial crisis, these same speculators are having to bring their over inflated prices down to reflect the real value of the islands.” So there has never been a better time to go ahead and splash out on your very own island. Even though demand is on the up, for the time being, prices are coming down.
