“Air Force One doesn’t come close in its interior appointments compared to our design of the A380,” confirms Edése A. Doret Jr., president of Edése Doret Industrial Design, an NYC-based company specialising in custom designs for high-end air-and sea-borne vehicles with a regional office in Kuwait. So what can be more opulent, better designed and indeed more spacious than the plane belonging to arguably the most powerful man in the world? The answer is the 150 million USD A380 recently commissioned by a Middle East businessman.
Doret’s assertion is not misplaced nor should it be shocking to vehicle design lovers. It prides itself on being able to rise up to the challenge of creating free-flowing space from defined areas. As Doret would have it, on planes for instance, you have to work around emergency exits, predetermined flex zones for lavatories and galleys. You also have to use materials that are light but rich. The design firm distinguishes itself with its wood, marble and leather floors.
The trick is in the approach and the results are monumental. “Traditionally in aircraft interior design, designers and modification have approached the interior as you would a mobile home,” he explains, “our philosophy is to create a loft-styled space as you would do when converting an old warehouse into a living space.” The homely feel of the A380 is undeniable, from the clean lines and grand furnishings to the subtle division of spaces and personal touches throughout the massive 59,458 square metre duplex cabin. The high life without a doubt.
