Cool Runnings: Castagna's Coach-Built Capri And Other Hand-Finished Motoring Beauties

A Milan-based coachbuilder that’s been around since 1849, the company works on a wide array of vehicles and even creates one-off automobiles - both petrol and electric - we can’t get enough of their coach-built Fiats. Our favourite is the 65,000 USD Capri. A four-seat, canopy-roofed Fiat 500 without doors or windows, it’s essentially a modern iteration of the iconic Jolly and the only real difference is its lack of wicker seats but if you want them Castagna will be delighted to oblige.

BAC – Mono

Though it’s powered by a seemingly unsexy four-cylinder 280bhp Ford engine, the 540kg British-produced BAC Mono packs a number of awesome stats: 519bhp per tonne (meaning better than a Bugatti Veyron), 0-100 km/h in 2.8 seconds (meaning faster than a Lamborghini Aventador) and a top speed of 275 km/h. It’s also astonishingly civilised, even if you’re only pottering about. True, 128,000 USD is a lot to ask for a car with only one seat and no trunk but given its near perfect engineering and build quality, the Mono is a toy every man should own.

Gibbs – Quadski

For the bargain price of 40,000 USD, you can be the proud owner of the ultimate go-anywhere machine. As its name suggests, the Gibbs Quadski is both quad bike and jetski. Powered by a 1.3-litre, four-cylinder BMW engine that delivers a creamy 80 hp on land and a stonking 175hp on water, the Quadski can reach top speeds of 70km/h on both surfaces. Performance figures aside, the neatest trick up its sleeve is how easily it transitions from one vehicle to another - servomotors raise and drop the wheels in under five seconds.

Twisted – French Edition

It may be a superb offroader but sadly, the aging Land Rover Defender is an undeniably flawed everyday car. Unless, that is, you buy one from UK-based Land Rover specialist Twisted Performance. The company upgrades almost every single element, all the way down to plugging the alarmingly large panel gaps. Our favourite model is named the French Edition and boasts good-looking exterior mods, a revolutionised interior and some vastly superior springs and dampers. Prices start at 70,000 USD.
