A Dash of the Daring

Broosk Saib never planned on becoming an interior designer, let alone one to some of London’s (where he lives) most discerning home owners. It was a flair for colour and an innate talent to turn spaces into brazen yet cosy livable areas that propelled him to the profession. “I am a colourful designer,” says the amiable Iraqi Kurd, “and I think that is because I have never been fond of empty spaces for living in,” an obvious jibe at society’s long-lasting obsession with minimalism.

Saib’s spaces may at first seem somewhat gaudy, full of expression, dynamism and perspectives hitherto abandoned by seemingly trendy purveyors of a modern living – Philip Stark being one of them. But there is an edginess and a sense of richness and warmth to Saib’s work that is breathtaking and engaging. He counts his favourite hue as red, “Since people are becoming less tolerant of blocks of colour, it is just a splash somewhere,” he explains.

The designer’s unique touches also lie in the confidence of his statements, loving the use of velvet as an embodiment of true luxury while preferring to use stone and wood in its simplest forms creating overall effect that is no less than staggering. Favouring the classical and traditional for its individuality, Saib’s approach is as unique as his personality is unconventional. “I tend to think of a space in my head as a stage set with a storyline, obviously the outcome has to be functional but there is no reason why you can’t play around with your fantasies,” he concludes.
