For many years the pinnacle of superyacht building has remained the province of a select trio of builders, but a new player has emerged with some admirable products under its belt. Dutch company, Oceanco with its slogan of ‘Yachts for Yachtsmen’ has since 1992, delivered 20 distinctive vessels that have travelled the world, spreading the company name.
Following a change in ownership four years ago, Oceanco has gone from strength to strength and consolidated its reputation by launching a number of luxury superyachts including this incredible 82 metre Alfa Nero.
Alfa Nero is truly unique in terms of size and design. Of course the most notable aspect is the long, low stern that offers effortless access to the sea through a spacious beach club. While making the yacht sleeker, the obvious benefit is the comfort this much space provides for the pool, sunbathing zone and the water sports areas. And what a pool it is. At nearly 7 metres in length and 4 metres in width this is an unheralded achievement in yacht design that has certainly become the focal point of this build. What's more, the same pool area also becomes a helipad or a dance floor by simply pressing a button to lift the bottom of the pool up to the deck level. “This club is the beach, the garden and the outdoor living area of the yacht where everyone can enjoy a marine lifestyle,” explain Nuvolari & Lenard of their concept behind the beach club.
The fully equipped tender garage, situated directly below the pool area, accommodates a guest run-around of 11.5 metres and two 6 metre crew boats. The custom engineered doors both to port and starboard, hinge from the top to allow the simple and efficient launch of the tenders and water toys.
The more traditional aft part of the upper deck is a family al-fresco circular dining area, which can accommodate up to ten people. This enclosed rounded glass veranda, with a 200-degree panoramic view, allows the guests to enjoy the vistas while dining, either out in the open. If the weather conditions become unpleasant the area can be easily closed up.
The formal dining area is located at portside on the main deck beyond the main staircase. The absolute privacy of this dining area also offers views of the sea through a reclining bulwark deck and a ceiling of windows. Being directly connected to the lobby and considering its size, the dining area can also easily be used as a meeting room.
The owner’s apartment is on the forward upper deck and includes a living room and private terrace which encloses a Jacuzzi and overlooks the sea.
Apart from the owners’ area, ten guests, in all, can be accommodated in two VIP cabins, two doubles and one twin, all of which have en-suite facilities. In addition to the ten double crew cabins, there is a separate Captain’s cabin and three separate cabins for the Engineer and the two Officers.
Another interesting feature of this yacht is the glass elevator surrounded by a spiral staircase located amid ship that serves the lower deck all the way up to the sky lounge deck. This is of course only for guests aboard the ship and similarly to other vessels whose owners enjoy their privacy, crew access is separately provided. Basically there is a staircase adjacent to the lift that ensures the crew can mill around throughout the yacht performing their duties without disturbing any one on board.
Art deco has been the spirit behind the design of the exterior styling and layout. The natural style transfers a sense of calm which is enhanced by the symmetry of the layout and the dimensions of the areas. The exterior styling is an aggressive combination of the beauty of proportions and symmetry.
The interior of Alfa Nero was designed by Alberto Pinto, well known for having decorated some of the grandest residences, yachts, and private jets, each with particular technical competencies where everything is custom designed. Through the use of exquisite hardwoods, leather, fabrics and elegant metals, the interior is timeless with a hint of art deco. By using traditional materials in new ways and working with the owner to create a unique and personal environment, Pinto managed to create a floating masterpiece.
Certainly the marriage of design between the exterior by Nuvolari & Lenard and the interior by Pinto has resulted in an innovative new superyacht that the proud owner will hopefully relish for years to come. One thing is for sure though and that is that, with an aft deck like Alfa Nero’s, this owner has bought himself some serious bragging rights.
