The Sophist’s Suite

This may be the sort of thing that one wouldn't and shouldn't, reveal, but let’s say we look at the subject from an entirely hypothetical point of view. And in this day and age we don’t even pretend to assume that the extramarital affair is a subject of curiosity that only pertains to the

Hotels that attract those on decidedly romantic missions coincidently seem to hire the most discreet of staff, and their lobbies are not overflowing station halls. Generally, as a purely academic observation, if you are unable to book a hotel far from home, wait for another opportunity if your fling is of the forbidden kind. Cheaters and adulterers are best advised to choose a hotel that guarantees to maintain your privacy as much as your dignity.

Here are some tried and tested (not by me, I might add) hotels for a tryst, illicit or perfectly above board:

Chateau Marmont, Los Angeles

This place is perfect for sins and therefore, if you want to believe the tabloids, is already stuffed with sinners. The staff is, due to their fair share of celebrity guests, well versed in the art of discretion. Book one of the perfectly secluded (and soundproofed!) cottages or bungalows and you’ll even have private parking spaces.

Ivy Hotel, San Diego

Just down the road from the Marmont, figuratively speaking of course is the Ivy Hotel in San Diego, which has a reputation as being the place of choice for some of the more adventurous, perhaps even ambitious cheaters. Let’s just say the chintz-covered beds and showers are extra, extra large, and leave it at that.

Hotel Sezz, Paris

Paris, the city of love after all, is perfect for the more mature sidestep and the Sezz is suitably situated apart from the city’s touristic areas. The rooms contain some discrete hints that the hotel caters to those engaging in illicit activities. How else would we interpret the enormous, all-revealing glass bathtub?

La Passion, Cartagena

With only eight rooms and being as far away as Colombia, you need not fear discovery. Enjoy the open and airy spaces, sweeping staircases, the rooftop bar and infinity pool, as well as the excellent cuisine. For a splash of refreshment after physical exertions, take a dip in your doublewide bathtub, adjacent to the bed.

Angsana Riad Tiwaline, Marrakesh

A centuries-old home-turned-boutique hotel, the Angsana Riad Tiwaline is like all traditional Moroccan structures, built around a courtyard. This unassuming garden is an atmospheric spot to romanticise - under the lights of lanterns, with some traditionally prepared tajine - before you retire to your room.

Le Vendome, Beirut

Synonymous with elegance and intimacy Le Vendome in Beirut is one of those hotels that offers sophistication and truly personalised attention by the proverbial bucket load, and that is what makes it an ideal getaway for anyone on a romantic mission. The fact that you can check-in at the rooms themselves is just one of the many advantages.
