Redefining Tradition

Finding themselves unsatisfied with conformity, Loai Naseem and wife Mona Haddad of Lomar thobes decided to revamp the traditional thobe design.

When Loai Naseem asked his tailor to make slight modifications and additions to his thobe, and the tailor refused – he knew something had to be done. As a result Lomar thobes was born, in early 2002.

Redefining thobes was the initial concept when Naseem and his wife Mona Haddad joined forces. They decided to inject a sense of modernity into the classical Arabian dress, to stay current with the ever-changing tastes of the youth, yet to still meet the requirements of traditionalists, with their unique and customisable designs.

Initially, the husband and wife team put together an array of designs and then tested them on a random few before introducing their avant-gardism to the market. Ever since, they have expanded to include over 100 employees, all working together to generate ever evolving ideas.

Some critics may see this as tampering with tradition. But in Lomar’s defence, they have not ‘changed’ the thobe per say, rather amended the traditional white design. Firstly, they decided to subtly and elegantly update the cuts. Secondly, fresher materials were introduced from natural cottons, to linens, silks and meshlah material (a thick cloak worn over the thobe, usually made from refined wool). And then the finer details were considered, these included the use of glass buttons, wood buttons and unique metal zippers.

But of course cutting edge innovation comes at a price, to which, there is a reason as Naseem explains, “There are in fact, no other thobes in the market such as those Lomar offers, especially with the quality of fabrics and the precise tailoring to the client.”

Perhaps that is the case, but Nassem and Haddad didn’t stop there. After witnessing the success of their designs, they broadened their range with tailored t-shirts, embroidered hats and cloaks. Customisation is the name of the game as can be seen in one of their latest offerings, a thobe that has a pouch for an iPod while also incorporating the headphone wires in its collar.

Lomar has now expanded with online ordering capabilities in addition to further boutiques, two in Jeddah, one in Riyadh and another in Al Khobar. In short, Lomar is a daring company that deserves recognition. They challenged conformity and triumphed with a daring, yet elegant new product.
