The sporty M Bike follows the launch of the BMW Mountain Bike just over a year ago. And given that it’s lightweight and rear-wheel drive, it’s not all that far-fetched to see it carrying M-Division’s seal of approval.
A unanimous point among all the judges was the bike’s irresistible beauty. The lightweight aluminium frame (which comes in three sizes so as to fit any rider) has been coated with matte anthracite, a form of hard coal that lends an understated silken sheen to the cycle. The colour scheme is accented by touches of red on the distinctive rims, handles and the inlay on the leather saddle. Of course, aesthetics aren’t everything, especially on a bicycle in this price range, and as you’d expect BMW has conjured up some worthy sportiness to warrant the hallmark of M-Power. The built-in Shimano SLX gear system is light and sturdy, the Manitou Match suspension fork on the front-wheel is incredibly durable and the disc brakes make for a clean stop.
“Anyone who rides this sporty speed bike through the city or takes a short tour through the countryside will immediately attract a lot of attention − at least for a few seconds – as the high total gear ratio transmission delivers astonishing speed,” a company spokesman revealed.
The M Bike is the greenest performance vehicle to ever emerge from BMW’s garages. Let’s just hope they don’t start trying to adapt pedal power to their four-wheel offerings.
