No one jeweller understands the Arab woman quite as well as Azza Fahmy. The designer has been creating colourful collections for just under four decades. This year, however, her creations for the Julien Macdonald show during Fashion Week put her on the international map and succeeded in raising the profile of the entire Middle Eastern end of the industry.
Azza Fahmy’s rigorous attention to detail and her copious creativity are both apparent throughout the collection. Departing from her traditional use of gold as a backdrop for her elaborate designs, Fahmy showed her pieces in trendier and more cutting-edge silver. Aimed to appeal to a whole new generation of trendsetters without alienating established customers, the collection of 20 geometrically-shaped pieces can still be bought in 18-carat gold.
You’ll find the grand yet stunning onyx silver bangle and the logic-defying double square black onyx silver ring among the more enticing pieces. Of course, she would not be Azza Fahmy without the quintessential Arab motif, a recurrent theme throughout the collection. You’ll also find a rather repetitious yet no less charming hand-cut silver bracelet reminiscent of a previous exclusive line in her jewellery.
But, ultimately, what you derive from these pieces is her seemingly abundant energy. In an Azza Fahmy you will always find true craftsmanship and timelessness. As the designer told Bespoke in issue 4, “The pieces are about inner beauty as well as the sensual and the psychological. It’s more than a piece of jewellery. It’s a piece of art.”
