But, here is a lifesaver for extreme times. It is called the firebow. And we present it to you because you should always know what to do even if you’ve forgotten your Dunhill Rollagas or your trusty Zippo.
You will need:
+ A piece of string
+ A curved, flexible stick
+ A straight stick
+ A flat piece of wood
+ A stone
+ A knife
Step 1:
Tie one end of the string to the end of the curved stick, twist it around the straight stick, and it tie the other end of the string to the other end of the curved stick.
Step 2:
Take your knife and sharpen one end of the straight stick and cut a V-shaped groove out of one side of the flat piece of wood. Finally, carve out a hole in the wood, just below the groove. Be careful not to snap the wood.
Step 3:
Put the flat piece of wood on the ground and place the sharp point of the straight stick into the hole in the flat piece.
Step 4:
Place the stone on the top of the straight piece of wood. Put one hand on top of the stone and push down. Now, hold the flexible piece of wood and begin to “saw” the wood back and forward. This will cause the straight piece of wood to spin in place.
Step 5:
Keep going until you get a few embers and, possibly, a little smoke.
Step 6:
Once it’s smoking, add some paper or the shavings from the pointed end of the stick and blow on the hole. Keep going until it catches on fire. Be sure to feed your fire with small pieces of wood or paper. Keep going until the flames are burning strongly.
