Bringing Up Daisy

There are three words to describe this scent: innocent, fresh and edgy. The innocence is of a twisted Lolita-esque sort; the freshness is provided by wild strawberries, violet leaves, jasmine petals and the heart of gardenia; and the edginess is created by a whiff of musk, vanilla fusion and white woods that gorgeously intermingle to create a tinge of raw sensuality.

Jacobs – like many of the designs for his eponymous prêt-a-porter Marc Jacobs and his diffusion line Marc by Marc Jacobs and his unsurpassable position as creative director at Louis Vuitton – has two distinct personalities. Having single-handedly brought two disparate concepts, grunge and chic, together in the early 1990s for Perry Ellis, Jacobs’ personality, and hence his style, is a negotiation between cool and intense. Suffering bouts of depression, his collections throughout the 1990s and early 2000s remained bright, witty, grounded and increasingly wearable.

He spoke to a generation of fashionistas looking for their place in the world – Generation X, perhaps, but with sizeable bank accounts to keep Jacobs from extinction. Following his creation of grunge-chic, the American designer was fired from his job as top-creative-dog at Perry Ellis whose owners feared he would run the company into the ground. Who would wear casuals priced in the thousands of USD? Legions of fans and celebrities it seems. While Ellis’ women’s line was axed, Jacobs caught the eye of fashion baron and LVMH chairman and ceo Beranrd Arnault who offered him the much-coveted creative director position at sure-fire cash cow Louis Vuitton.

The style impresario has come of age, creating accessory line after accessory line that brought the LV moniker into a new century. Shuttling back and forth between Paris and New York City, Jacobs’ duality also seems to have matured into humorous self-knowledge placing him at the top of his game.
