Worth Its Metal

The term flatware is used to describe knives, forks and spoons that most of us would call cutlery. The term cutlery should actually only be used to describe knives. First of all, if you want the best, look at nothing but Sterling silver. It may be more expensive but it typically lasts longer, is of higher quality plus it adds sophistication to that special occasion.

Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5 per cent pure silver and 7.5 per cent other metals, usually copper that helps harden the soft silver. Other metals can replace the copper; usually with the intent to improve various properties of the basic sterling alloy, sparking heavy competition between the various manufacturers with no one alloy emerging as an industry leader or standard.

Hallmarks for the metal were introduced in England in 1327 when the medieval guilds began testing silver to ensure that it was of the required Sterling standard. This is regarded as the world’s first official quality testing and consumer protection system.

Traditionally styles varied greatly from country to country and even across time but it was the English who were most reticent towards fanciful design, so if you wish to go for the more minimalist look then its best to opt for the best English brand, Mappin & Webb. However, don’t forget that it was the Italians that introduced the fork to the English at the turn of the seventeenth century. And years later Buccellati would emerge as the best of the Italian silversmiths adhering to the country’s finest traditions. The French, on the other hand, spearheaded Renaissance fantasy designs that they are still famous for, and Odiot is still regarded by many as the pinnacle of silverware. For a more modern approach to flatware, French company Christofle is the better bet.

Whichever of the following brands you do decide to go for, know that these are the very best in silver flatware any of which is an investment well worth its metal. One that should hold its value for many years. After all, historically speaking, silver was regarded principally as an ostentatious method of storing riches, so go ahead and gather your wealth where it really matters.

Odiot

Founded in 1690, the House of Odiot gained notoriety during the reign of Louis XV. It later went on to produce many prestigious orders for Napoleon Bonaparte.  Still very much influenced by the decorative style it has always been famous for, its craftsmen have continued to work with tools from the 1700s.  For true extravagance ask for the Prestige collection or heirlooms. Odiot pieces are the very best of French silverware.
