BABE MAGNET

Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars dreamed up this magical bed capable of carrying up to 900 kilograms. “No matter where you live, all architecture is dictated by gravity. I wondered whether you could make an object, a building or a piece of furniture where this is not the case - where another power actually dictates the image,” Ruijssenaars explained. It took him six years in order to perfect the design and he achieved it by way of permanent and repulsive magnetic forces. The good news is that such magnets require no electricity in order to function, and their loss of power is so negligible that they’ll still keep the bed in levitation thousands of years from now. Four thin tethers, tied between the bed and the floor, make sure that the bed remains at a height of 40 cm with zero lateral movement whatsoever. We absolutely adored this bed, until we saw its price!

HAPPY COLOURS

Light therapy is a proven cure for almost all people with insomnia. This is because low or inconsistent levels of melatonin, which is correlated to the exposure of light on the skin, can cause a person to have a jacked up circadian rhythm, which in turn causes sleeping problems. One rather creative way in which you can get your light fix would be from this Poesy Luminotherapy Bed, designed by Philippe Boulet. It features creative LED lighting units hidden in the headboard and the footboard. The entire system is linked to a central processing unit that allows you to choose and fix the colour or vary it at a desired speed via a remote control. Even if you don’t need this bed for medical reasons it’s a fun toy and being able to program an exact colour at an exact time is quite possibly one of the coolest, not to mention calming and inventive, ways of waking up every morning. You can colour your own moods.

TECHIE’S DELIGHT

If you thought beds were just built for sleeping, then think again. The futuristic gadget-loaded HiCan bed, designed by Italian ‘Think Future’ design director, Edoardo Carlino, is every bit a technological sanctuary. With an inbuilt JVC entertainment system boasting a DLA projector and slide-down 70-inch screen, a 4.1 surround sound system, a computer, an Xbox 360 and a number of other features including iPod controls, temperature controls, adaptive LED lighting as well as motorised shades for sleeping in absolute darkness. The user will probably have little motivation ever to go anywhere else.

BLISSFUL REST

The Lomme bed, which stands for ‘Light Over Matter Mind Evolution’, was developed following two years of research into both the physical and psychological effects of sleep deprivation. It utilises both sound and light therapies in order to enhance the body’s energy centres and stimulate the palliative process of renewal. Its designer, a young Pole by the name of Agnieszka Bernacka declared that, “Lomme is more than a bed, it’s a place for meditation, for rejuvenation. We hope that one day Lomme will be universally associated with bold, innovative, life enhancing design.” We have yet to try it ourselves but if it really can deliver a blissful slumber to those that are normally deprived then its price tag is not nearly as dear as you might initially imagine.
