Pioneering in the Arab film industry, Nadine Labaki is setting an example for the both filmmakers and inhabitants of the Arab world, particularly the women of the region. Her efforts have finally paid off and gone big screen. Last year, Labaki directed, co-wrote, as well as starred in her feature-film debut, Caramel.

Labaki’s journey began in the early 1990s, on Studio Al Fan, a televised Arab talent programme, where Labaki was a directing-contestant. Since, Labaki has become the go-to director for Arab singers’ video clips. But her real breakthrough came many years later with the directing of Nancy Ajram’s video, Akhasmak Ah. It was the first of its kind, as it portrayed women in a strong light, and Labaki’s unique vision shone through. Despite the controversy surrounding the clip, it rose to fame, and so did its director. Her other music video ventures were the recipients of best music video awards in the Arab world.

But Labaki kept setting her sights higher. Next came the Coca-Cola endorsement – the terms of which specified that Labaki will direct Coca-Cola Light commercials.

Now Coca-Cola endorsements aside, when Labaki’s first feature film, Caramel, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival during the Director’s fortnight it was rightly received with a standing ovation. Meanwhile, at that time, there was turmoil brewing in Labaki’s home country, Lebanon. Just as she had finished shooting Caramel, Israel waged a 33-day war on Lebanon. Yet, Labaki remained resolute and fittingly persevered with her dreams. The film has grossed over 12 million USD to date.

Her drive? A sense of rebellion derived from the frustrations arising in the workplace – especially social restrictions in the Arab world. The future? To continue to break barriers and impose her unique vision in each and every one of her projects.
