The Favourite Son

Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak has an unmistakable quality to him. Intelligent and deferential, you could at first mistake him for a diplomatic dealmaker – his father was an ambassador. But as ceo and managing director of Mubadala Development Company, the government of Abu Dhabi’s investment wing, Al Mubarak has shown that he can hold his own and then some.

Fresh-faced and in his early 30s, Al Mubarak has ensured Mubadala’s growth under his watch. With an eye on expanding the company’s interests internationally, he negotiated and secured one of 2007’s most talked about deals. In September, he spearheaded the buyout of 7.5 per cent of global private investment company, The Carlyle Group, for a neat sum of 1.35 billion USD in cash. No joking matter since the Washington-based company has 76 billion USD under management. For Mubarak the acquisition was natural since they have common cause in aerospace, energy, power, infrastructure, transportation and healthcare. He is also the chairman of Executive Affairs Authority of the Government of Abu Dhabi.

Understanding your weight in high-powered business circles is best measured by an expansive portfolio, he has propelled the company into different directions. Naturally, for a mind as meticulous and focused as his, Mubadala’s investments have been wise and cautious – earlier this year the firm was granted a 15-year renewable license for a Nigerian telecom venture and a 40 per cent shareholder stake. Mubadala also is a five per cent shareholder in Ferrari. With 24 key investments under his watchful eye, including Dolphin Energy which transports gas from Qatar to the UAE, Al Mubarak has the smarts and staying power to fast become the region’s top executive.
